KNP Style Guide

STYLE GUIDE

We cannot emphasize enough how what you wear impacts the final product of your images.  That is why we have created this style guide for you so that you choose the most flattering outfits for your session. Now what we recommend is different from what other photographers recommend because of the way we shoot and the look we are going for in our images. Our style of photography is light, minimalistic and organic.  So let’s dive right on in… or you can skip this all and use our complimentary KNP  “Client” Collection (available for sessions booked at the studio, in-home or Greystone Stables; not available for our short + sweet mini sessions) for the Mommas. We also have diaper covers for babies newborn to 12 months. We have you covered!

  1. COLORS
    1. Neutral Earth Tones (warm earth tones)
    2. Coordinate over Matchy-Matchy
    3. Avoid bright colors, neons,  and too many dark bold colors. A bold color for an accent is great but if everyone is wearing dark brown it can be too much.
    4. Coordinate with the session enviornment.
      1. If shooting in the studio we highly recommend warm neutrals. If you are a lover of blue make sure you are looking for blues with warmer undertones. You do not want that color cast on your skin to make you look blue as well 🙂
      2. If in your home, coordinate with your home decor colors.
      3. Outside… don’t compete with nature!
  2. LADIES
    1. Maxi/Midi dresses or skirts
    2. Avoid shorts, short skirts etc.
    3. Wear comfortable shoes, we shoot in nature and in a studio so pumps are not a good idea and can look silly. Wedges are great for outdoors and most of the time our clients go barefoot.
    4. NO SHOES (or socks) IN STUDIO (if you do wear socks please be mindful of not wearing black, navy or white socks, tan socks only)
    5. We prefer no shoes in home as well.
    6. If dresses aren’t your thing DON’T worry! White jeans or light colored denim or joggers are great options.
    7. Avoid super dark blue jeans
  3. FELLAS
    1. Be COMFORTABLE
    2. Nice cotton tee or casual button down, henleys
    3. Avoid stiff button downs
    4. We are not a “fancy” photographers so suits don’t translate well for our style and the locations that we shoot at.
    5. DADS… if you don’t want to go barefoot PLEASE wear grey or tan socks.
    6. NO SHOES IN STUDIO
    7. Khaki pants fellas! Here is a link to a great option… anything but navy or black PANTS
  4. KIDS
    1. Please dress your kids in comfortable clothes.
    2. Dresses or rompers for the girls
    3. Light and Airy
    4. Avoid overly Dressy outfits… if you are worried about them messing it up, DO NOT WEAR IT!

This might not be how you dress everyday, but these are going to be pieces of art in your home. Think about it that way and that you are styling a piece of art rather than just taking pictures in your favorite pair of jeans.

MORE TIPS:

  • Have bellies full
  • DO NOT tell your child to smile…they automatically shut down or give a forced, un natural smile.
  • Do laugh and play games with your children
  • Understand there will probably be a few meltdowns if you have young children, I completely get this as I have young ones too.
  • We specialize in young families, so if little one seems done don’t give up! The best images come at the end of the session
  • Do accessorize
  • Do bring in texture
  • Mommas with young ones, be prepared to nurse or have a quick bottle snack
  • Bribery works WONDERS
    • but please don’t offer snacks right when we start the session, makes it really difficult to NOT offer them the whole time
  • DO get your hair and makeup done
    • We have great recs if needed
  • Arrive early!!!!
    • You may need to dress your kids before the session
    • Also, we have paid childcare for sessions for a certain amount of time and if you are late that just cuts into our time together. We do not shoot over for a few reasons, but number one is because of lighting conditions. We start at a certain time to get the best lighting for your images.
    • WE DO NOT ADD ON TIME DUE TO TARDINESS
  • HAVE FUN, bring bubbles, bring fruit snacks
    • PLEASE do not bring messy snacks to the studio (all white everything)
  • If your kids have a meltdown, stay calm I we promise we are gonna make awesome images!
